The 2009 vintage of Chateau Lagrange represents this Saint-Julien Third Growth during an exceptional year that allowed the estate to showcase the full potential of its revitalized terroir. Under the ownership of the Japanese Suntory company since 1983, this historic property has undergone a remarkable transformation that has restored its position among Saint-Julien's finest estates.
Chateau Lagrange's renaissance began with Suntory's acquisition and their commitment to substantial investment in both vineyard and winery. The estate's 118 hectares of vineyards, among the largest in Saint-Julien, are situated on excellent gravelly soils that provide ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
The 2009 growing season was exceptional across Bordeaux, and Lagrange's extensive vineyard holdings allowed for precise selection from different parcels to create a wine of remarkable complexity and depth. The estate's modern winemaking facilities, installed following Suntory's acquisition, enabled optimal vinification of this outstanding vintage.
Under the direction of winemaker Matthieu Bordes, Chateau Lagrange has consistently demonstrated its ability to produce wines that combine the power and structure of great Saint-Julien with accessibility and elegance. The vineyard's composition, typically around 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, and 7% Petit Verdot, creates wines that express the classic Saint-Julien character.
The 2009 Lagrange displays a deep, dark ruby color with purple highlights, indicating exceptional concentration. The nose reveals an attractive bouquet of cassis, blackberry, cedar, tobacco, and subtle spice notes that characterize fine Saint-Julien wines. On the palate, the wine shows excellent structure and balance, with refined tannins that provide framework while maintaining the elegance that defines great Saint-Julien. The flavor profile encompasses rich dark fruits, cedar, tobacco, dark chocolate, and mineral undertones, all integrated with remarkable precision.
The wine demonstrates the success of Lagrange's modernization program, showing how careful investment and technical expertise can restore a historic estate to its former glory. This vintage exemplifies the estate's ability to produce wines that honor Saint-Julien's traditions while benefiting from modern winemaking techniques.
