Château Mouton Rothschild 2014

Château Mouton Rothschild 2014 is an elegant and classically proportioned expression of one of Bordeaux’s most celebrated First Growths. Situated in Pauillac on the Left Bank of Bordeaux, Mouton Rothschild was elevated to Premier Grand Cru Classé status in 1973, the only alteration ever made to the original 1855 classification. The estate is renowned for combining the power and structure of Cabernet Sauvignon with an unmistakably exotic, opulent character that distinguishes Mouton from its Pauillac peers.

The 2014 vintage was shaped by a challenging growing season followed by an extraordinary turnaround. A cool, uneven summer initially raised concerns, but from late August Bordeaux experienced one of its longest and finest Indian summers, with warm, dry and sunny conditions continuing through October. This allowed Mouton to harvest at optimum maturity between 19 September and 9 October.

The final blend comprises 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc, giving the wine a particularly Cabernet-driven personality.

In the glass, the wine shows a deep ruby to garnet colour, still retaining considerable youthful intensity. The bouquet is refined yet unmistakably Mouton, opening with cassis, black cherry and dark berry fruit before revealing cedar, tobacco, graphite, violet and subtle spice. With air, more complex notes of vanilla, dried flowers, mint and finely integrated oak emerge.

On the palate, Mouton Rothschild 2014 combines concentration with remarkable precision. Blackcurrant and dark cherry form the fruit core, framed by silky but persistent tannins and a pronounced mineral and iron-like backbone. Tobacco, cedar, graphite and spice develop through the mid-palate, while the wine retains the freshness and definition characteristic of the best Left Bank wines from 2014. The finish is exceptionally long, structured and composed, balancing Mouton’s characteristic richness with a distinctly classical Pauillac restraint.

This wine has performed consistently well with wine critics receiving a number of 95-96 points ratings. Now entering an attractive stage of its evolution, the 2014 is beginning to reveal secondary complexity while retaining substantial fruit and structure.
