The 2006 vintage at Chateau Pontet-Canet represents a crucial transitional moment in the estate's biodynamic journey—the third year of full conversion following the experimental phase. The growing season tested the resilience of Bordeaux's most ambitious vignerons with extreme weather swings. March became the rainiest in 30 years, followed by average conditions through May. June was unusually dry and hot, while August became the coldest in 20 years, slowing ripening significantly. September brought scorching, sunny conditions, followed by ten rainy days, then a return to sunshine, making harvest a exercise in patience and precision.
Under Alfred Tesseron and Jean-Michel Comme's guidance, the estate's biodynamic management included soil treatments with preparations 500 and 501, use of draft horses for cultivation, and reliance on tisanes and natural plant preparations for disease control. The vineyard's 47 individual parcels were managed separately, with harvest timing determined by tasting grapes and monitoring phenolic ripeness rather than sugar levels alone. Yields were kept below 35 hectoliters per hectare through natural vine balance.
In the glass, the 2006 displays an opaque bluish-purple color that remains remarkably youthful. The nose reveals profound complexity; pure cassis and blackberry fruit, graphite minerality characteristic of great Pauillac, cedar and tobacco notes, with the distinctive clarity that biodynamic farming brings to wine aromatics. The palate shows full-bodied power with firm but refined tannins, excellent acidity providing freshness and longevity, and a mineral-driven finish that speaks to the limestone substrata beneath Pontet-Canet's gravel soils.
