Chateau Pontet-Canet 2008

Château Pontet-Canet 2008 is a superb expression of Pauillac and one of the standout wines of a vintage that has increasingly shown its quality with time. A Fifth Growth in the 1855 Classification, Pontet-Canet occupies an exceptional position in Pauillac, directly across from Château Mouton Rothschild. Under Alfred Tesseron, the estate emerged as one of Bordeaux’s great overachievers, with an increasingly meticulous approach to vineyard management and a move towards biodynamic viticulture.

The 2008 growing season was challenging, with a cool, wet summer placing considerable pressure on the vineyards. A warm and dry September proved decisive, allowing the Cabernet Sauvignon to ripen slowly and giving the estate the opportunity to harvest relatively late, from 1 to 17 October. The final blend comprises 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot, with an alcohol level of 13%.

In the glass, the wine remains remarkably youthful for its age. The bouquet opens with cassis, blackberry and blueberry, gradually revealing graphite, cedar and subtle smoky notes. With air, more evolved nuances of tobacco, forest floor, dried herbs and gentle spice begin to emerge. There is plenty of classic Pauillac character here, particularly the graphite and blackcurrant signature, but Pontet-Canet gives it an unusually generous and polished expression.

The palate combines impressive concentration with freshness. Ripe black fruits form the core, framed by fine, velvety tannins and a vibrant line of acidity. The texture is substantial without becoming heavy, while savoury notes of graphite, tobacco and earth provide complexity beneath the fruit. The finish is long, fresh and mineral, with the wine’s tannic structure now becoming increasingly integrated. The château itself describes the 2008 as powerful and juicy, with a saline quality, rounded tannins and a long, vibrant finish. 

Widely regarded as a candidate for 'wine of the vintage' from some wine critics who awarding it between 95 - 96 points and highlighting its richness, texture and freshness. Reinforcing the view that this is a wine that performs considerably above the general reputation of the 2008 Bordeaux vintage

Now approaching two decades from harvest, Pontet-Canet 2008 is entering an excellent drinking phase, particularly from well-stored bottles. It has enough tertiary development to provide the complexity expected of mature Pauillac while retaining substantial fruit, freshness and structure.

Its combination of Cabernet structure and mature savoury complexity makes it particularly successful with roast or grilled beef, côte de boeuf, lamb, venison, braised short ribs and other richly flavoured meat dishes.
