The 2009 vintage at Château Prieuré-Lichine is a remarkable expression of the warmth, generosity, and elegance that define one of Bordeaux’s greatest modern vintages. Situated in the heart of the Margaux appellation, Château Prieuré-Lichine has long been recognized for producing wines that combine refinement, aromatic complexity, and a distinct sense of place. The 2009 vintage showcases these qualities in abundance, benefiting from near ideal growing conditions that allowed the estate to produce one of its finest wines in recent decades.

The growing season began with a cool and relatively dry spring, encouraging healthy and even flowering. Summer arrived with abundant sunshine and warm temperatures, providing excellent conditions for ripening. Importantly, the heat was moderated by cool nighttime temperatures, allowing the grapes to retain freshness and aromatic purity. The vineyards experienced minimal disease pressure throughout the season, enabling the fruit to reach exceptional maturity. Harvest took place between late September and mid October under perfect weather conditions, allowing each parcel to be picked at its optimum moment.

The estate’s gravelly soils, characteristic of Margaux, played a crucial role in shaping the vintage. These well drained soils encouraged deep rooting and natural vine balance, producing berries of concentration and finesse. Following harvest, the grapes were sorted meticulously before fermentation in temperature controlled vats. The wine was aged for approximately 16 months in French oak barrels, around half of which were new, allowing complexity and structure to develop while preserving the elegance of the fruit.

In the glass, the 2009 Château Prieuré-Lichine displays a deep ruby purple color with impressive intensity. The nose is expressive and inviting, offering aromas of blackberry, black cherry, and cassis, layered with notes of violets, cedar, graphite, and subtle hints of tobacco. As the wine opens, nuances of dark chocolate, spice, and forest floor emerge, adding depth and sophistication.

On the palate, the wine is full bodied and beautifully textured. The tannins are ripe, polished, and seamlessly integrated, supporting a generous core of dark fruit. Flavors of blackcurrant, plum, and black cherry unfold alongside notes of cocoa, sweet spice, and mineral undertones. Despite the richness of the vintage, the wine retains remarkable balance and freshness, with vibrant acidity providing lift and precision. The finish is long, silky, and persistent, marked by elegance rather than sheer power.

The 2009 Château Prieuré-Lichine perfectly captures the seductive character of Margaux in a great vintage. It is already highly enjoyable with decanting, yet possesses the structure and balance to continue evolving gracefully over the next 15 to 20 years.
