From the grand cru village of Ambonnay comes this extraordinary Champagne from one of the most revered grower producers in the region. Francis Egly, fourth generation of the Egly family, has elevated these already exceptional Pinot Noir-dominant Champagnes to the absolute apex of quality since taking over in 1980. This Extra Brut represents the pinnacle of what critics call "Burgundy with bubbles" - wines of remarkable complexity, generosity, and signature vinous quality that have attained cult status among fine Champagne enthusiasts. Based on the generous 2018 vintage with 40% reserve wines dating back to 2016, this cuvee showcases the heat of 2018 more in fruit profile than weight, emphasizing persistence over pure power.
The wine reveals an intensely aromatic profile with saturated fruit - apricot, spiced apples, and grilled lemons - already expressive yet not fully unsprung. Soaring from the glass with scents of pear, pastries, peach, and honeysuckle mingling with orange zest, this Champagne displays the house's signature richness and concentration. 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay from grand cru vineyards in Ambonnay (90%), with fruit from Bouzy and Verzenay completing the blend. Fermented entirely in Burgundian oak barrels with indigenous yeasts and no malolactic fermentation to preserve natural freshness. The palate is medium to full-bodied with tangy acidity and remarkable depth, supported by an ultra-fine mousse and concluding with a long, saline finish that exemplifies the mineral precision of grand cru terroir.
