From its very first sip, Krug Grande Cuvee Edition 166 conveys an exceptional level of finesse and complexity achieved through over twenty years of careful craftsmanship. Created around the 2010 harvest and enriched with 140 individual wines spanning 13 years, including reserve wines from vintages dating back to 1998, this cuvee exemplifies the House of Krug’s unique philosophy of blending beyond the confines of typical non vintage Champagne.
Edition 166 opens with a luminous, light golden hue and an abundance of fine, vivacious bubbles that set the tone for an exquisite sensory journey. The first impression on the nose is one of vibrant florality in bloom, layered with gracious notes of ripe orchard and citrus fruits complemented by touches of marzipan and warm gingerbread. On the palate, this Champagne reveals a remarkable spectrum of flavours, from creamy hazelnut and nougat to barley sugar, almond, brioche and honey, each weaving together into a deeply textured, nuanced tapestry.
The blend is composed of 45% Pinot Noir, 39% Chardonnay and 16% Meunier. Krug cellar master Julie Cavil highlights that the particularly vivacious Meunier from plots in Sainte Gemme and Courmas counterbalance the brightness of the Côte des Blancs Chardonnays, while reserve wines from Oger contribute roundness and those from Verzy and Bouzy add elegance and harmony. Around 42% of the blend originates from the House’s reserve wine library, bestowing added breadth and structure.
This cuvee benefits from extended aging, around seven years in Krug’s cellars, before release, deepening its patina and evolving its aromatic and textural layers with greater grace. The wine is bottled only after disgorgement, never before the full maturation is complete, in accordance with Krug’s exacting standards.
edition 166 embodies the quintessence of Krug’s philosophy: a multi dimensional Champagne offering a joyous balance of vibrancy, generosity and savory depth that is designed to elevate every occasion. With its extraordinary blend of structure, finesse and aromatic richness, it begs to be paired with an array of dishes. Ideal accompaniments range from shellfish and oysters to foie gras, from aged cheeses to subtly spiced dishes.
