TIGNANELLO 2020

The 2020 vintage of Tignanello reflects the continuing legacy of one of Italy’s most iconic wines, born from innovation and an uncompromising pursuit of excellence. Produced by the Antinori family on the historic Tignanello estate in the heart of Chianti Classico, this wine represents a landmark in modern Italian winemaking. First released in 1971, Tignanello was among the earliest Super Tuscans to break with convention by incorporating non traditional grape varieties and aging in small oak barrels, redefining the potential of Tuscany on the world stage.

The 2020 growing season began with a mild winter followed by a cool spring, which delayed budbreak slightly and promoted even vine development. Warm summer conditions arrived gradually, without excessive heat, allowing the grapes to ripen steadily while preserving freshness and aromatic precision. Timely rainfall during key moments of the season helped maintain balance in the vineyards, while cool nighttime temperatures in late summer enhanced complexity and structure. Harvesting was carried out parcel by parcel from late September through October, ensuring each variety was picked at optimal maturity.

The vineyards of Tignanello sit on limestone rich marl and schist soils at elevations of approximately 350 to 400 meters above sea level. These well drained hillside sites contribute to the wine’s hallmark balance of concentration, freshness, and minerality. Fermentation took place separately for each parcel and variety in temperature controlled tanks, followed by malolactic fermentation in oak. The wine was then aged for approximately 14 to 16 months in French and Hungarian oak barrels before blending and further bottle refinement.

In the glass, Tignanello 2020 presents a deep ruby red color with vibrant highlights. The nose is refined and expressive, offering aromas of ripe black cherry, plum, and blackberry, intertwined with notes of violet, tobacco, cedar, and sweet spice. Subtle hints of balsamic herbs, graphite, and dark chocolate emerge with aeration, adding complexity and depth.

On the palate, the wine is full bodied yet polished, combining richness with remarkable freshness. Silky tannins frame a core of dark fruit flavors, including cassis, black cherry, and wild berry. Layers of cocoa, leather, spice, and mineral nuances unfold gradually, supported by vibrant acidity that gives lift and precision. The finish is long, elegant, and persistent, marked by savory complexity and finely integrated oak.

The 2020 Tignanello is a classic modern expression of Tuscany, balancing power, finesse, and age worthiness. It is approachable with decanting in its youth, yet possesses the structure to evolve beautifully over the next 15 to 20 years.
