The 2012 vintage at Veeder House is widely regarded as one of the finest growing seasons in Napa Valley in recent decades. A dry winter was followed by an early and even budbreak, setting the stage for a long, consistent growing cycle. Warm days and cool nights throughout the summer allowed for gradual ripening, while the absence of significant heat spikes preserved balance and freshness. The stable conditions continued through harvest, enabling the team to pick each parcel at optimal maturity. On the steep, rocky slopes of Mount Veeder, these ideal conditions translated into small, intensely flavored berries with exceptional concentration and structure.
Veeder House remained true to its philosophy of minimal intervention and precise craftsmanship. The fruit was hand harvested and rigorously sorted to ensure only the highest quality grapes were used. Fermentation took place in small lots, allowing for careful monitoring and gentle extraction. Extended maceration enhanced depth and texture while preserving the natural character of the fruit. The wine was then aged in French oak barrels for approximately 20 to 24 months, contributing structure, complexity, and refinement without overwhelming the purity of the vintage.
In the glass, the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon presents a deep, saturated garnet color with youthful intensity. The nose is expressive and layered, offering aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, and ripe plum, complemented by notes of cedar, graphite, and subtle hints of dark chocolate and spice. A distinct mineral undertone reflects the mountain terroir, adding depth and intrigue.
On the palate, the wine is full bodied and richly textured, with a powerful yet polished structure. Concentrated dark fruit flavors unfold seamlessly, supported by firm, well integrated tannins and balanced acidity. Layers of cassis, black cherry, and mocha are interwoven with nuances of tobacco, vanilla, and crushed stone. Despite its intensity, the wine retains remarkable harmony and precision, with a sense of freshness that carries through to a long, persistent finish.
The 2012 Veeder House Cabernet Sauvignon embodies both the power and elegance that define great Mount Veeder wines. It is approachable in its youth with decanting, yet possesses the depth and structure to age gracefully for 15 to 20 years or more.
