The 2014 vintage at Veeder House forms part of a remarkable trilogy of consecutive high quality years in Napa Valley, often referred to as a period of consistency and excellence. A dry winter led to an early budbreak, followed by a warm and even growing season with minimal weather disruptions. These stable conditions allowed for uniform ripening across the vineyard, while the elevation and rocky soils of Mount Veeder ensured naturally low yields and concentrated fruit. The absence of extreme heat preserved freshness and balance, resulting in grapes with both richness and precision.

At Veeder House, the focus remained on expressing the unique character of the mountain vineyard. The fruit was hand harvested at optimal maturity and sorted carefully to retain only the best clusters. Fermentation took place in small lots, allowing for detailed attention to each parcel. Gentle extraction techniques were used to build structure while preserving finesse, followed by extended maceration to enhance depth and complexity. The wine was then aged in French oak barrels for approximately 20 to 24 months, integrating tannins and adding subtle layers of spice and texture.

In the glass, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon presents a deep garnet color with a vibrant, youthful core. The nose is rich and inviting, offering aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, and dark cherry, complemented by notes of cedar, graphite, and a hint of violet. Subtle undertones of cocoa, baking spice, and crushed stone add further complexity, reflecting both the ripeness of the vintage and the influence of the mountain terroir.

On the palate, the wine is full bodied and beautifully structured, with a refined balance between power and elegance. The tannins are polished and well integrated, supporting a core of concentrated dark fruit. Flavors of cassis, black plum, and mocha unfold with clarity, layered with hints of tobacco, vanilla, and mineral nuances. The acidity provides freshness and lift, ensuring that the wine remains vibrant and focused despite its richness. The finish is long and persistent, marked by silky texture and a lingering savory character.

The 2014 Veeder House Cabernet Sauvignon is approachable earlier than some more structured vintages, yet retains the depth and balance to evolve over the next 12 to 18 years. It represents a harmonious expression of Mount Veeder Cabernet, combining concentration, elegance, and accessibility.
