The 2018 vintage at Veeder House is widely regarded as one of the most refined and balanced in recent Napa Valley history. A long and moderate growing season defined the year, beginning with ample winter rainfall that replenished the soils and supported healthy vine growth. Budbreak occurred slightly later than in preceding vintages, followed by a mild spring and a summer free from extreme heat. These stable conditions allowed for gradual and even ripening across the Mount Veeder vineyard, with extended hang time enabling the grapes to develop exceptional flavor complexity while retaining freshness and natural acidity.

The high elevation sites of Veeder House, with their rocky, well drained soils and optimal sun exposure, played a crucial role in shaping the character of the 2018 vintage. The vines produced small, thick-skinned berries with concentrated flavors and refined tannins. Harvest was conducted in carefully selected passes, ensuring each parcel was picked at ideal maturity. The grapes were hand harvested and sorted meticulously before fermentation in small lots, preserving the distinct expression of the vineyard. Gentle extraction methods were employed to maintain elegance, followed by extended maceration to build depth and structure. The wine was then aged in French oak barrels for approximately 20 to 24 months, contributing subtle layers of spice and enhancing integration.

In the glass, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon displays a deep garnet color with remarkable clarity and vibrancy. The nose is expressive and complex, offering aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, and ripe plum, complemented by notes of violet, cedar, and graphite. Subtle hints of cocoa, baking spice, and crushed stone emerge with aeration, reflecting both the purity of the fruit and the influence of the mountain terroir.

On the palate, the wine is full bodied yet remarkably polished, with a seamless balance between richness and finesse. The tannins are silky and well integrated, supporting a core of concentrated dark fruit. Flavors of cassis, black cherry, and mocha are layered with nuances of tobacco, spice, and mineral undertones. The acidity is finely tuned, providing freshness and precision that carry through to a long, elegant finish marked by persistence and harmony.

The 2018 Veeder House Cabernet Sauvignon represents a benchmark vintage for the estate, combining structure, elegance, and depth in perfect proportion. It is approachable in its youth with decanting, yet its balance and refinement suggest a long evolution over the next 15 to 20 years.
